Is there any reason to have a prot-specced warrior, or is an arms-specced warrior with a sword-and-board good enough for any instance? My guild's trying to decide if we need a prot-specced warrior for the very high end stuff and none of us were in beta long enough to find out for ourselves.

I played in beta, but did not level anyone of my characters past 35. However I am pretty sure that all instances in game (as of the end of CB ) could be completed without a warrior specced in Protection. However we have still yet to see raid content so this could change, but I do believe Blizzard stated that they want you to be able to play your character the way that "you" want to so almost any spec would work, but it may be tougher. It would be better if a Nurfed member could answer this for you. Also I just remembered that the new patch is going to bring alot of changes to the warrior class so we will just have to wait and see.

Yeah, the talent changes will be interesting, but I figure if an arms-specced warrior could tank everything fine in the past, then no matter what the talents changes are any high level warrior can do the same.

It would really suck if to handle stuff like Illidan you *had* to have a prot-specced warrior.

A prot specced warrior is mainly a boon to random pickup groups that aren't going to have nearly as much cohesion as they should. In a guild group or any group of ppl that have spent enough hours playing together an arms/fury build is just fine. It just takes a moderately skilled warrior and a party willing to think tactically about things.

Thats my $.02 anyway.

Cool, that sounds good. I've been in some godawful bad pickup groups, but my guildies are competent and disciplined.

We had no trouble with instances in closed beta with Indal's current talent set up. (non-protect) See his sticky post.

A protection speced warrior is useless on anything but a carebear server. Its purely PvE, and wont last in PvP. Every time I've done a level 50+ instance I've been with an Arms/Fury speced warrior save once. That one time was BRD, my group wiped 9 times. I have wiped just one other time in an instance since 50, and pulled aggro from the warrior only twice, once was Eranikus :(.

Arms/Fury warriors can tank fine.

I should note i play a level 55 mage.
