View Full Version : Hunter questions

Just a bunch of newbie hunter questions that are stumping the people I ask.
1) What's a good pet for early on power-leveling with BM? The debate is between the rake for the 1.2 attack speed (although that doesn't affect dps) and prowl or the albino bat in Tristfal glades (for screech, the supposed ultimate glue-aggro ability) or just a normal bear? Since this is an alt, buying food isn't an issue.
2) Once I get into the mids 20s, is it worth while to grab Lupos?
3) I've had people say the crab has the best armor/damage reduction across all pets. Is this true?
4) With the rapid fire talent in BM, is it more worthwhile to get a faster bow so it procs a lot, or a slower bow for when it procs it does more damage? PvP vs PvE?
5) Is there some trick to fighting mobs that heal themselves with a hunter earlier on? Sure later I'll get intimidation or scattershot, but at the moment my problem is trying to fight healers when imp concussion is only a "chance" at best.
6) With all the dragonscale leatherworking changes, is it worth while to get it over engineering? (Thinking the blackdragon scale set in particular)

get a fast attacking pet for healers so it interrupts it, and make sure you do enough burst damage in it´s healing phases. Also a pet that outlasts mobs even though they heal is helpful. Deathflayer never failed me for tanking;imo the best tanking pet there is. also the only 1.6 scorpid.

My issues with the rare scorpion is that he doesn't have bite (claw runs your focus out too quick), has lowhp (armor does jack to casters), and I haven't seen much use of the poison (tops of 20 dps at highest rank).
Both the cat and bat have medium hp and bite and different ways of aggro (cat has better dps then the scorpion, and the bat has the screech aggro).
If I wanted a real "tanking" pet, I mentioned the bear and crab but I want a solid leveling pet which seems to be damage+aggro. As a BM, I can heal him and as an alt of a level 60 I can afford food fine.

oh yeah i forgot about magic bypassing armor.
Well i use a cat and it´s just fine, the different available resistances you can learn at your pet trainer are also useful.
I never have problems with casters since they are so low in hp and go down so quick :/
Btw is it really true that beastmastery is better for leveling?
If so, from which level is it better than marksmanship?

Input: I lowed my turtle that I snagged from Hinterlands, at 60 with some stam / armor talents and so on it has roughly 3-3.5k hp and 6-6.2k armor and comes with rank 7 bite. The turtle has a little low on the hp but you could always drop some natural armor and go all in for hp and resistance. But that doesn't answer your question doesn't it, so let me try again :p.
1. I used The Rake to about lvl 40 and I never snagged aggro from him and I still did all my tricks. He didn't even have the highest rank of Growl so I could be a shitty hunter but The Rake did the trick for me. Never heard of the albino bat though, you know the name of him? Don't know the stats of an "unbuffed" bear when they are lvl 60, but I rather go a little more hp and resistance then armor when I choose my tanking pet, at least when it comes to end game. Just check around forums for stats on bears / turtles / scorpids when they are lvl 60 and then you'll know what pet to pick.
2. I rather go for stats then looks, the most rares do have both but I don't know about Lupos stats so until I know the stats of him I'd keep The Rake.
3. I frankly don't know
4. I didn't pick it for pvp 'cause I'm always on the move when I'm pvping. Only time I stand still is when I do an aimed shot as an opener / on a runner otherwise it's all about movement and then rapid shot doesn't do much help.
5. Get The Rake for interupts.
6. I don't know what changes been made but I'd stick with engineering since most (all?) items in dragonscale is boe/buyable. BDS set is still boe isn't it? And if you're in a guild they surley help out to get some fr to their players.
This is just my opinions and the way I've been playing, I'm not trying to tell anyone that this is the way to go or anything, ofc you should play a style that fits you.
And I can come with up with a couple of questions myself:
1. How do I make money when I'm an Hunter? Note, I recently picked up engineering so I could probably sell some stuff on ah and so on but that's not the best way to make money and I know it. Doing raids and a 5 hrs long AV nets me some sweet gold but it's only around 25g a day or something like that. Any secret tips to a fellow hunter?
2. How to build a pvp and pve pet and what pet to use for pve? I now have Broken Tooth at lvl 58 and a Hinterlands turtle at 60, BT hasn't gotten any skills yet since I'm waiting for him to ding 60. I was thinking dash rank 3, max frost, arcane and shadow for frost nova, polymorph and fear "immunity" but does arcane/shadow resistance help against poly/fear? And should I pick a bear instead of a turtle as a pvepet? The turtle has around 3-3.5k hp and 6-6.2k armor and I rather go more on the hp and throw in a little resistance and such, or is it the "wrong" way to do it? Just want to be as effective as possible in pve.
3. Fire resistance for a hunter? My guild ha been clearing our way in mc now and the guild is starting to talk about fixing more resistance gear and so on. I haven't been online for a couple of weeks do to hardwarefailure but browsing the offical forums I've heard things that a hunter doesn't need as much FR as the melee (duh) but they still need around 100-150 FR. The full Black Dragonscale set gives 65 fr and I get another 10 from the DM trinket, but then I need at least 25 more if the "rumors" are true. So, do I need FR, where do I get FR eq and where does it drop?

the way i make money in all my classes is to buy up items that are obviously worth more than they´re on the auction house for, and sell them up to 4x the price. Items which don´t require money to auction are ideal for this.
If you have a lot of money, you can buy a lot of high demand items, or even all of them.. and then sell them for more. People WILL buy them if you´re the only one offering them. You can do this at almost any kind of item, but it depends on the economy of your server if it works or not.
I know someone that made 12k this way

Not possible due to the server is pretty new and nobody has any money to spend then nessicary and me having around 25g after buying mats for 2x 15 agi enchant, +5 res enchant, +7t stam to bracers and 2x Dawns Edge. So grinding is my cup of tea for the moment.

No other choice then grinding yes, but where to grind? That's the question ;).
