Prescriptum: I had posted a thread about this earlier, and it appears to be gone. Since I recieved no censor, I'm going to go ahead and assume it was lost in the server/bandwidth shuffle, and that it was not deliberately deleted because of inappropriate content of some form. If I am mistaken in my assumptions, I apologize.

Hello, I'm new to WoW as of Open Beta, and I've had some questions about the formulas underlying WoW combat that I hoped someone here could answer. Specifically, how is DPS calculated? I read here earlier (before the post vanished) that DPS was some combination of strength and attack power. What portions of DPS do these two separate variables provide? What do they do differently to necessitate the use of multiple variables? Magic resistances are measured as a simple number, and I'm not certain what that number represents. I asume that a fire resistance of 100, for example, does not offer a 100 percent immunity to fire resistance spells. If not, how do these resistance measurements work? Lastly, I notice a similar division in defensive statistics -- there appears to be one variable called "armor" and one called "defense," both of which play a role, ultimately, in determining how much damage you take. What are the distinctions between these two variables?

Again, I know some of these questions are probably unanswerable at the moment, as no one has completely solved the formulas themselves. I also understand that many of the formulas involved are probably being tweaked regularly by blizzard, further obfuscating any attempts at solid analysis. But if you have ANY answers to the above questions, or if you can even point me in the general direction of the right answers, I'd appreciate any advice I can get. Thanks!

Super. Thanks to both Gille and Doodle. A few questions that remain at the moment: what are the distinctions between defense rating and armor count? How do those two statistics ultimately combine into Damage Reduction?

Not 100% sure about it but ill try to explain it.
Only armor increases ur damage reduction! I think 75% is the highest against an equal lvl mob. (Blizzard changed that the last patch at lvl 60 with 7000ac it was around 56% when i remember right or mabye 65% not sure :D )
Defense rating defines how hard it is to hit u.
They def rating without +def items is 300 at lvl 60.
But if u wear many +def items ur Def rating is maybe at 340 so if u fight a mob Ur def rating is the def rating from lvl 68 so the mob will miss u more often.
If im wrong please correct me :)

There used to be a nifty DPS calculator on this site, not sure if it's still around.

A few more questions (trying to get these in before retail):

For the offhand damage penalty, is the penalty incurred before or after strength/agility buffs?

Can deep wounds stack if criticals happen to come in sequence?

Does anyone know precisely how much hp is gained per stamina point? How much of a percentage chance to crit is gained by an agility point? Are crit chances affected by opponents level?

Again, thanks to any and all for your help.

Deep wounds doesnt stack

Depends what class you are for the health per stam point
-Rogue is 10 per stam point
-Warrior I think is 15

Crit percent per point of agility is something like .05 i think
- Rogues crit percent per point of agi is greater than other classes
