Prescriptum: I had posted a thread about this earlier, and it appears to be gone. Since I recieved no censor, I'm going to go ahead and assume it was lost in the server/bandwidth shuffle, and that it was not deliberately deleted because of inappropriate content of some form. If I am mistaken in my assumptions, I apologize.
Hello, I'm new to WoW as of Open Beta, and I've had some questions about the formulas underlying WoW combat that I hoped someone here could answer. Specifically, how is DPS calculated? I read here earlier (before the post vanished) that DPS was some combination of strength and attack power. What portions of DPS do these two separate variables provide? What do they do differently to necessitate the use of multiple variables? Magic resistances are measured as a simple number, and I'm not certain what that number represents. I asume that a fire resistance of 100, for example, does not offer a 100 percent immunity to fire resistance spells. If not, how do these resistance measurements work? Lastly, I notice a similar division in defensive statistics -- there appears to be one variable called "armor" and one called "defense," both of which play a role, ultimately, in determining how much damage you take. What are the distinctions between these two variables?
Again, I know some of these questions are probably unanswerable at the moment, as no one has completely solved the formulas themselves. I also understand that many of the formulas involved are probably being tweaked regularly by blizzard, further obfuscating any attempts at solid analysis. But if you have ANY answers to the above questions, or if you can even point me in the general direction of the right answers, I'd appreciate any advice I can get. Thanks!
