View Full Version : Equipment progression outpacing skills and talents?

I'm sort of worried if Blizzard will keep skills and talents - especially the ones with static values - up to snuff with the equipment progression in the game. It's already been stated that they will use EQ-type equipment progression for raiding, ie. raid to get gear in order to raid a higher difficulty encounter for equipment in order to raid an even higher difficulty encounter and so on so forth.

While this is all fine and dandy for PvE, this could spell disaster for PvP. As people get better resists, higher armor, stats and better toys, the original set of skills, spells and talents - especially those with static values (like damage spells) - will fall behind. This is sort of similar to what happened to DAoC, where equipment/stats/etc got so out of hand that classes that had static value spells basically became obsolete in comparison to the melee classes. The stage seems to be set for something similar happening in WoW. PvP seems to currently be balanced around what exists at present, with seemingly no mind to the future. Skills, spells and talents that are part of classes on release will be hard to change, since they are part of the measuring stick that raid content is based around. So as PvE "evolves", PvP will be left at the wayside. Perhaps Blizzard has something in mind to address this issue, but I haven't seen any evidence of it.

Thoughts?

I am sensing a similar trend in that already you have heavy dps purple items that make warriors and paladins crit for more than a mage ever could, even in the theoretical realm. One item that comes to mind is the Blade of Baron Rivendare which has the unholy aura on it from Warcraft 3 and poses a huge advantage to the classes that can actually *use* a two handed sword. Not to mention that this may be a purple item rare drop, it is ultimatley *just* a purple item, being the third tier of the higherarchy of item class (legendary and artifact being higher). This is debateable but i do believe artifact will incompass items such as one of a kind weapons such as Uther's hammer or Tychondrius' Chest Plate, whereas others are not so sure. These items will eclipse the power of purple items and have not been externally tested, and i don't care how much you test it internally, they did let Destiny out with a 300 str proc and something like 66 dps... ridiculous.

I have a feeling there will be character upgrades in addition to hero classes, war 3 style.

Im hoping blizzard will eal with that, by giving things which lower the chance that a spell is resisted to casters and similar things.

I think it is a problem. They have some mechanisms to handle it, but I still think melees scale better. I actually favor casters, but I have decided to make the switch because of this issue.

After EQ and my poor little Magician I just want to stay ahead of the curve for once.
