View Full Version : Mage grinding. Am I doing something wrong?

No matter how hard I try I can't seem to break 10k exp/hr.
I typically grind on mobs that are +/- 1 level of me and I am using the PvE build that alcaras so kindly worked up. My typical spell order goes something like this: Fireball > Fireball > Fireblast > Frost Nova > Move back for more range > Fireball > Fireblast/Scorch to finish them. I can usually get about 3-4 equal level mobs before having to rest, but I still feel like I am missing out on something. I realize that I will never be able to grind at the pace of rouges or hunters, but I should be getting more than 10k/hr.
Any thoughts?
Edit: I've been trying to AoE grind the last few days as I have heard that is the way to go, but I've been having trouble with that as well. I'm not a cold build, so I don't have acess to the nifty nova - coc - cold snap - etc, trick.
I cast mana shield rope up 3-4 green mobs then use arcane explosion till they are low. If they try to run then I cast frost nova and arcance explosion them to death.
While this is effective at killing multiple mobs at once, I find that I only get 300-400 exp for the batch and I am totally spent. As opposed to going 1v1 on equal level mobs where I easily get 200 exp per mob and at 3-4 mobs before resting... well, you see what I mean.
Any ideas?
try more STA gear if u aoe. also use frostnova earlier, then flamestrike and ae spam. no need to trap running mobs and no manawasting (more downtime) manashield.
10k/h was ok when i was lvl 20. lvl32+ dabryies farm is nice for aoe, got ~20k+ there. check out the sticky on the official board.
lvl52+ go DM and ae lashers. best XP in game.

Honestly IME, unless you are doing ridiculous damage to yellow+ mobs with an ungrouped Priest keeping you alive, AoE grinding is usually slower exp/hour than just straight grinding. What level are you?

I'm level 37. I just got done running Scarlet Monastary a few times and the exp there was awesome. between 15-17k/hr well above what I'm usually getting. Only down side is it's somewhat difficult getting good groups.
I was looking over the various grinding guides, both here and at allakhazam.com, and I noticed that most of the suggested mobs aren't that great for mages. Allakhazam suggested a lot of caster and ranged type mobs, but I've found that those are harder for mages than melee, I guess it's because they don't pull and you can't nova them effectively. My favorite mob types are melee humanoids because they tend to have little or no special attacks and have very good drops in the way of cloth and equipment.
Any suggestions on mob areas that might work well for mages specifically?

nice guide, but he should recommend fireblast for leveling. it's the best dps and dpt you can get.

anyone try the DM grind lately?
I tried at lunch with a friend (55 shaman and 53 warrior together) and we'd go in...if I was group leader and went in, we'd see the lashers fine. we then ungroup outside and regroup with him leader and go in - and it'd say "You are not in this instance's group" - but we couldn't even zone out, or see any mobs or anything...it'd hearth us back. We did it twice, same thing both times.
Wonder if they hotfixed this or something

Have the same one of you leave party first every time, and let him invite all the time also and you should be fine.

AEing with a healor is the best way to go.
I AEed with 4 ppl in a group and still surpassed 45k and the mobs were like 3-4 levels below me =).

yepp i have a lvl 17 mage and he is 404 specced
i went for 3 arcane subtletly, 1 arcane focus and 4 imp frostbolt cause with imp frostbolt you dont have to cast that long when the fight begins to slow the mob
and 3 in arcane subtetly cause i never use arcane so with arcane subtetly the threat generated by my arcane spells reaches 160%!!!!! who can say no to that?
pretty good build uh?
Go for + damage and you hit 20-30k from level 30 up

Just an update:
The maradun slugs as well as the Dire Maul East lashers are broken now. While it's still quite possible to do them, Blizzard has nurfed the exp so much that you can only get around 25k unrested/hour from either. Haven't really play tested the maradun slugs, as I am arcane/fire speced, but I can tell you from 5+ levels of grinding the DM lashers that the only reason to really mess with them at all now is for the drops.
That aside, the drops there are some of the best gold/hr I've seen yet, with 1 or 2 Living Essences, 2-3 level 50+ greens, 20-30 random herbs, and 5-10g worth of vendor trash. I'm not joking, if you get lucky and get a few essences in a row this puts you well above 30g an hour. Like I said I grinded off an on here from level 52 to about 55 and have 9 Living Essences in the bank in addition to about 200g I made from everything else I got.
I'm now level 57, fast approaching 60, and I want to share a few things that I've learned over the course of my attempted power level.
First off, the scorch build suggested by the mage site linked earlier in this thread really only comes into serious play in groups and instances. When I solo'ed (which was most of the time), I tended to only use scorch once or twice in the entire fight and even then it would be at the end of the fight to finish off the mob. That tends to gimp the extra damage from fire added by the 5 points in Imp Scorch. If I had it to do over I would have gone with a standard fire build, going for impact and bypassing imp scorch. Not having Imp Scorch actually helps agro management in instances as I found myself frequently pulling agro when criting with scorch. I could write an entire article on scorch in PvP but I'll spare you. Again, forget about Imp. Scorch!
The second thing I wanted to contribute is that grinding really is only faster if you don't have a plan for what quests you want to do. I found that 5 or 10 minutes of preperation reading thottbot and allakhazam for quests not only gave me a much better idea about where to go and what to do, but also saved my sainty. Trust me, getting 30k unrested by questing is a lot more fun than getting 40k unrested by grinding. Seriously, I almost quit the game several times between the levels of 40 and 50. Don't grind because you miss out on the fun of the game.
Anyway, those are just my thoughts on the whole mage grinding business.
