I started on a new server with couple real life friends. Due to school and work, I havnt been on WoW for weeks. Now my friends are all in their high 30s and low 40s, and I'm stuck with my lvl 12 human mage.
You guys think a mage has any chance of catching up with them? I know hunters and rogue lvl fast, but how are mages?
And to all the lvl 60 (or close to it), in mass pvp raids, how do you use your mana? Do you go all out and sit after couple people? or Conserve?

if they've been playing for "weeks" as you say without you and they've only just started hitting 40, you have a very real chance of catching up with them. Getting to 30 is very easy, the XP required per level is somewhat farcical when you compare it to 60 (or 50 for that matter)
Around 45 your friends lives are going to get much harder, and it will become and effort to level, quests start to dry up and instancing becomes the best way to get through the occasional level.
Id suggest just putting a lot of time i, skipping content you dont think you need [rfc, rfk, bfd] to save yourself a fair few hours of play time and just level in that period.
If you can put in a good weekend of play, theres absolutely no reason why you cant be pushing through into the low 30's, another weekend and you should be in the 40's. i Doubt your friends will even be 50 by that time.

2 mages is a fun and fast, but a boring way to grind through xp.
Better than 1 mage/priest IMO.
If your gonna do quests you'll have to put in double the time their putting in, to catch up. Only way to catch up is to grind and maybe do some quests along the way, but it has to flow with the grinding, and like I said I think 2 mages would be most ideal.
Get improved arcane explosion, and aggro a whole bunch of mobs and lay them out real fast, rinse/repeat.

You can get to 20 in about 1 day play (saturday), but most people can easily do up to Lv 20 in 2 days. You can get to Lv 30 in about a week and a half. The rest is going to really be depending on how much time you have.
It's very doable, you can get to 40 from 12 in less than a week simply by grinding -- it's not the most fun method but it will get the job done.

You should be able to catch up with relative ease. Just watch out for levels 16-20 and 28-33, those for me have always been really ugly levels.
