its a first person shooter for the xbox 360 game console. it sold a lot of copies.
The story is decent, they did a good job putting together the story and made it feel somewhat cinematic - the music was probably the best part of the single player game, it set the right mood. The biggest problem with Halo is that they know they have a following and it's for multiplayer, so didn't want to risk making any changes to a game they know would sell, so they're just making a couple changes that could probably be released as marketplace expansions.
moooNNEYY TRAINNN WOOOOOOOooooooooooooo
It was a fun game, just not a "170 million dollar in one night and staying up for midnight release" type of fun game.
The way they setup the multiplayer system is interesting, they did that portion a lot better then Call of Duty 4. It's cool being able to setup a party with your friends, play a game, and then automatically switch that party into theater and then watch the video of the game you just played. Although I am disappointed they didn't do more with the editor and single player, there is not much replay value for single player once you get the skulls; you do not even really need the skulls to get all the meta score achievements which were set extremely low and have no real merit.
High score list? what?
A lot of the newer FPS games have some of the newer innovative features that Halo 3 missed out on because they decided to release earlier then some of the next-gen shooters. Call of Duty 4, TF2, and some other ones have this feature where you can watch how you died from the person who killed you perspective. Halo 3 is the type of game where you're going to die from some random location and go,"What the fuck just killed me?"
And what's with the Needler? Who decides to take the worst gun in their game series and make it overpowered as fuck.

the needler is fucking dumb, but it needed to be better.
as far as the entire halo heatlh system... i'm really not a fan of it at all. its really inevitable for *any* player to do dmg to you... and even if you're horribly mediocre going up against a player w/ "exceptional" aim/movement in a machine gun battle... you're still probably going to get the player down to 1/4 left on their sheild. all it takes is another spawn or another player and voila you're fucking dead.
now this is cool and all.... but seriously i can't count how many times i've straight shit canned 2 players back to back, and then some random chode comes up after doing a respawn and can kill me in a split second of sub-par aimed machine gun fire.
Coming from a true (in my eyes) fps background in the Quake/UT series I'm used to the idea of DOMINATING other players. Being a noob in those games wasn't having 6 kills and 32 deaths (only so low in halo series because of the forced respawn min/max timer)... it was more like -4 : 55-100. You straight shit on people because you were better than them. Halo rewards mediocrity and punishes ambitious gamers. This is also why largely it IS so popular.... you can step into any game and feel as if you contributed to your teams success (you didn't btw... its all cleverly designed to fool you because you're an idiot). People are quick to put down a skill fps / fighting game / rts these days because they get shit on and quit... thus driving game sales/community support/company support down the shitter.
Why must the gaming public be so bad. :(

cactus you bring up a good point with the assault rifle but i think the way bungie majorly buffed the shotgun/dual maulers is the end to that. i have many cases where i get triple kills with those burst weapons in heavy combat situations without losing my shield, when combined with effective use of grenades. the biggest difference i think is that in halo compared to quake you have to completely know the levels and use the motion tracker to know what floor your opponents are on, and identify what weapons they are likely carrying based on that. like with quake, i hardly played the game outside a few matches and beating the single player campaignand i went up to wsvg louisville a year ago and dominated the non hardcore player Q4 tournament not reallyknowing the levels but being good at fpses in general.

FPS on console still makes me want to cut myself... maybe UT3 on PS3 will be different since you can use a mouse+keyboard!
