Savor, I'm on DnT/Drama's Server with my Horde characters now, in a guild that operates much like Nurfed seems to now; raid 3-4 days a week to keep from burning ourselves into oblivion, and having fun competing in PvP the rest of the week. It's not like we're PvE noobs or anything; we've got 10 bosses down in Naxx and all. It's enough to keep us in comparable gear. When it comes to WSG and AB, it is quite apparent that the other guilds on the server, including Insomniacs and Gentlemen's Club (two Horde guilds raiding Naxx 6 days a week) are significantly less polished. I've seen full Naxx-geared groups (from both Horde and Alliance) fall to guilds still working through BWL, but who enjoy PvPing more and have a lot more experience working together as a group in there.
The real issue is that PvE accomplishments are so easy to measure, across all factions and all servers. There are multiple sights that rank every guild from 1-2000 based on how many Naxx bosses they've killed, and how fast they did it. By contrast, there's really no way for me to say "We're better than Impervious in PvP!" simply because we can't actually fight you -- and even if we did, there's always the complaints about "not our A team" or "flasks lol" or what have you.
I'm really looking forward to the expansion, where PvP ability is more easily measured by the Arena's ladder system. I hope it is. Maybe. Perhaps.

First off, I highly doubt this is anyone from Impervious because we aren't ones to openly brag about our pve accomplistments. Second, that was definitely not our A-team in that SS, it was just a quick group of whoever wanted to log on to the test server at the time, although I will admit, you guys would most likely beat our A-team, as well. Too bad y'all transferred off our bg group right as we finished naxx, we've actually been fielding some good pvp groups lately and there are no good horde groups to fight anymore =\

I have never, ever seen two top flight guilds openly admit that they were both prepared and ready with their A-teams in a fair and balanced WSG.
One of them had their B team, or one had flasks, or one wasn't really playing to win, just to farm kills, or it was late at night and they weren't really paying attention, or some other such thing.

don't you get it? you can N E V E R judge the skill of a player in mmorpgs correctly. you can just talk about stuff like "who killed boss X first" and even this has to do with "luck" (for example: which colors does nefarian have). same problem with pvp, just concerning other stuff. "omg, in this constellation, being 1/33/7 skilled is way better than X/Y/Z, we didn't have a chance. if we had skilled A/B/C, we would've won!"
but knowing that mmorpgs always rely alot on aspects noone can control (critical strikes, resists etc.) should not lead to the conclusion that whenever one loses a match, the best thing to do is yell "lag! luck! gear! talents!" but instead, just remain silent, knowing that in theory, it could have been just the other way around.
being a good player doesn't make you god in wow. it just highers your chances of survival in certain situations/the chance of not even being encountered with unwanted other situations, so you can often judge easily who's an absolute idiot and who's experienced (NOT necessarily skilled) but as soon as there is a group of players who are all very experienced and also quite skilled, you just can't judge their skill by looking at their way playing mmorpgs. the differences are too dim and based on so many other aspects the players had no influence on.

Yeah, I have about 200 days played across all characters now, maybe 210. That's a lot, don't get me wrong, but I bet there are a good number of people on these forums who have as much or more. And to those people mocking me because they have only 150 days played, I will repeat my position: you're like the 300 pound guy calling the 350 pound guy fat.
And Rubiks, here's the story behind that. My guild transferred off Archimonde while I was busy playing my Mage. When I came back to play my Paladin, they were gone, so I releveled on Mug'Thol to join them. Just as I hit around 55, open transfers became available. I did eventually hit 60 with that second Paladin, but I didn't want to have to regrind gold, an epic mount, exalted with Argent Dawn, exalted with Darnassus and such, so I simply transferred my original Paladin over. The second level 60 Paladin has less than 10 days /played total. I plan on leveling my third Level 60 Paladin in the expansion, this time a Blood Elf, to return to the Horde for good (right now I split time between the Paladin, my favorite class, and the Mage, on my favorite faction).
The end!

I think being a good player comes down to more aspects as "being skilled", "being geared" or "luck".
In any game I have played there have always been players not as skilled (per definition: not clicking so fast), as other players and still beating the majority of the "skilled" opponents.
I think an understanding of game mechanics, an ability to make the right decision or even the ability to make a decision at all also contributes to being a good player.
It just happens that these aspects have more impact in WoW as in, let's say, an RTS game like WarCraft III. In theory you could know WarCraft III and all it's tactics, counters and counter-counters inside out, if you lack the ability to perform it, you still sucked. You could make up for some of this ability, but certainly not for all of it.
In World of WarCraft, you can click the dispel button as fast as you want, if you lack the knowledge of game mechanics and don't KNOW that, for example ghostwolf or hammer of justice can be dispelled it won't matter. Simply because BASIC knowledge of game mechanics and thinking declare Ghostwolf as a shapeshift and Hammer of Justice as a stun and therefor don't apply the logic that they can be dispelled.
Of course, that's spells of the faction based classes, which makes the fact even lessern known among the broad mass.
When I started playing, there were very few druids on our server and there were a handful at max. that knew specific things. I had druids not dispelling viper sting in a duel because the mechanics didn't imply that a sting was a poison by simple logic, there were also druidswho couldn't tell the difference in the cast animation of mages casting sheep as compared to arcane missiles and therefor got sheeped.
So, being a good player in WoW is defined of knowing what to do when, how to react to which situation and simple knowledge of game mechanics.
The bad thing is, people started crying about imbalances simply because they were to stupid to grasp the game mechanics and react, and eventually the game got easier and easier. Now we have color codes for different debuffs, druids go the ability to shift out of polymorph, etc.
