View Full Version : The *Magelock* (rather long)

Hello guys,
yes yes, I know that when people use the word magelock they usually use it to describe how gimped the other warlock is because he does'nt got Dark Pact and is actually spending points in Destruction.
However as I see it, I think a *magelock* can be viable PvP build, perhaps even better than Slowlock.

There are some spells and talents that makes me wanna try it down the magelock path. First of all sure there are some very good talents in Affliction and those I don't want to miss out on therefore at least 17 of my points will go down Affliction, perhaps 19 but I can't imagine any more than that. What I want:
Improved Corruption, obviously and it is'nt exactly hard to get either. IMO a must for all builds.
Nightfall, in a big fight you do want to DoT everything around you with corruption if not only to get Shadow Trance proc.
I would obviously also want to get Shadow Mastery, but I just can't understand how I would be able to get it. Because I would need to put 25 pts in the Affliction to get there and IMO there are no other real good talents. Imp Drain Life and Fel Concentration you say, sure for a slowlock this is great and they will probably espescially pay off in 1v1 PvP fights, however in larger than that I don't think I will spend time channeling Drain Life.
Hence my points in Affliction:
Suppression Rank 5
Improved Corruption Rank 5
Improved Life Tap Rank 2
Improved Drain Life* 2 pts
Amplify Curse Rank 1
Nightfall Rank 2

*I have to spend two points somewhere to get to the fourth tier where Nightfall is. Lets see, Curse of Weakness I don't believe in. Imp CoA is perhaps a good choice, if blizzard ever comes around fixing the talent. Imp Drain Soul is'nt viable for PvP and even if it was I don't know how usefull the talent would be because I don't think I'll get much Spirit gear and the fact that you have to actually drain someones soul (I'm guessing that this talent is'nt affected by Soul Burn). Then there really only is Fel Concentration and Drain Life left and out of those two if I just would spend two points I think Imp Drain Life will payoff more when I actually get around and use Drain Life.
Grim Reach is definatly a good talent, much better than Destructive Reach. But anyhow I'll let this talent wait for awhile.

In the Demonology tree I will only get 5 pts of pure Stamina with Demonic Embrace. Improved Imp is also a talent which I think can payoff pretty good, however I'll let this talent wait as well.

Desutruction then. Now the problem in this tree is that IMO all the first two tiers is just more or less useless talents. Imp Shadow Bolt is not so worthwhile in my build because I will only use Shadow Bolt when Nightfall procs and even than I don't know how usefull the talent is because if I've got it wright (which I think I have) Corruption can actually use the effect. Then I've have to use Cataclysm, not the best of talents I give you that but I think that it will payoff more than Imp Shadow Bolt as it is on always.
Second tier, here I just can't get why Aftermath is'nt stun but eitherway I think Aftermath is better than Bane, espescially in this build where Searing Pain will be a spell used often.
If going down the Destruction Tree the Shadowburn is kind off a no-brainer.
Next in line is Devastation which together with Ruin makes more or less all of my damage spells payoff a lot more. As I've also allready mentioned Searing Pain will be a spell of usage in this build and therefore these talents together with Imprvoed Searing Pain can bring up my DPS quite a chunk when focus firing.
So the Destruction tree so far looks like this:
Cataclysm Rank 5
Aftermath Rank 5
Devastation Rank 5
Shadowburn Rank 1
Improved Searing Pain Rank 5
Ruin Rank 1

That gets me to a total of 44pts which means 7pts spare. And I'm not sure where to put them. As I see it there are a few talents which I can think to spend them on.
Grim Reach is offcourse one of them.
Improved Immolate too, as this even further increases my abilities of focus firing something.
Then I also got some thoughts about improving my Imp. I will probably just use the Imp in PvP battles so why not improve him, I ask? I can see both Improved Firebolt and Improved Imp pay off. Both increase the Imps DPS, sure this is'nt so much, mostly a extra push. But they also increase the Imps bloodpact which together with Demonic Embrace gives the Warlocks the ungodly stamina that she is famous of. Improved Firebolt also makes my Imp something that casters will have problem whith because of the fact that he can interupt them once every second. However, I'll have to play around a bit with both the Imp and Succubus in PvP before I can make up my mind about upgrading the imp, but I think it comes down to this: in small PvP encounters or 1v1 the succubus paysoff greatly but in a larger battle I'm guessing the Imp will pay off more.
The last pts I think I'll spend on Grim Reach and upgrading the Imp however these I am not certain of.

So in Destruction I will miss out on Conflagration and a 10% boost to some of my damage, nothing I really cry about really. With all upgrades, Searing Pain almost hurts as much as Conflagration and I don't have to have the victim Immolated either.

Now, thanks to everyone that took time to read all this or at least just looked at the talents and thanks even more of if some of you takes the time to answer this, critisize (sp?), flame me or any feedback at all.
