$600 launch price
$60-100 games
........
This on top of the fact that Every Playstation 2 I ever owned or encountered (Traditional not slim) became nearly unusable with DRE's (Disc read errors), Im going to have to see some fucking amazing games to even consider buying one at that price.

my ps2, from launch, works perfect today and I have done everything to it that could destroy it. Somebody even stepped on the disc tray while it was out, bent it horribly, then just bent it back and it played with no problem. Its all luck of the draw.

All this sony sucks because ps3 is so expensive really doesnt make sense. Bluray players cost $1000. You should be sucking sony's dick for selling a Bluray player for $600 that can also play games and has a free online game service.

You must be real lucky then, cos like the other dude said, I've never even heard of an old PS2 that isn't pretty much fucked today. Mine plays, but every month or two I have to clean the laser and many games take ages to load. If they are scratched up forget about it.

As for the other thing, who gives a flying shit about blueray players? Are people really still fawning over these pointless technology updates that bring you +13.4753% quality for +400% price? Hey I loved cartridge > CD, but something tells me this is just big companies trying to stay ahead of the curve in any way they can, regardless of how much actual value is present in the hot new technology. Then again I'm happy with my nintendo emulator and I even considered PS2 expensive when it came out and waited a year. Besides, first gen games usually are pretty shit... interestingly it's for the same stupid reason above: technology drives the first gen games, rather than ideas (darn that unrealiable creativity). Remember when the first wave of "ooh, aahhh" 3D platformers came out? They all friggin blew. Because companies were like "We need to stay ahead of the curve by making one of these 3D games, let's go!"

Why don't you just not be an impatient douchebag, wait 5 years until all this "OMG AWESOME" technology is cheap, and then buy it? If it's really so awesome then it will still be just as awesome in 5 years when the price has gone down by 3/4. The way people seem to be convinced that if they aren't keeping up with the cutting edge then they are somehow losing out on value is complete bullshit and just goes to show that there isn't any real value there in the first place.

I understand people want to play the cool games TODAY, but when today has a 400% markup and I still enjoy old games and have grown up enough not to be uber-omg-wowed by neat graphics, I have to say Sony is totally out of touch (at least with me).

Gaming consoles are about developers and their ideas, not technology. So IMO Nintendo is on the right track on this one.

Dissing because I think it's better for gaming as a whole and better for the individual gamer that this direction changes. Also you might want to direct that comment to advertisers as well.

Can't see what people are complaining about here.

As for PS2, I bought mine days after the initial release, and it's still working perfectly fine.
It's been on my floor for all this time, as above posters I've never cleaned it or followed any "usage instructions".

I gotta ask all those with a reliable PS2....
Do you keep and play it in the horizontal or vertical position?

My first PS2 that died was never stored or played in the vertical position, it went out about a year after purchase.

Second PS2 was in the vertical position for about 40% of its lifespan, lasted a little longer but started suffering from DRE's, popped the case open, cleaned the lense and adjusted the distance the lens is from the disc, it will play about 35% of available games, DRE's or "no discs" the others.
I have always kept the machine clean, off the floor and cool. Three of my buddies have replaced thier PS2 at least twice, all taken relatively good care of. Guess its just luck of the draw.

Mostly horizontal. I did keep it in a vertical position for a couple of months but it kept getting knocked off during parties (roughly 3 foot drop that it took a number of times) despite duck taping it to my tv, so I moved it back to horizontal. Vertical just seems like a bad idea to me, putting in discs like that... just never seemed or felt right with me. My PS2 took all kinds of damage during my year in the dorms, 3 foot falls, being stepped on several times, tray being bent, etc... and it still works the same today as it did right out of the box.

My playstation 1 had a whole cup of orange crush spilled right on top of it. I had to take it apart and dry all the pieces individually, and there wasnt much I could do about them being saturated with sticky sugar. It is still pretty much fine. I think it's just luck. Another thing might be whether or not you've played it for really long stretches at a time, because the heat I think fucks with the laser.

I'm pretty sure I've read warnings against using it while vertical...
